Saminaka’s Resilience: Community Leaders Spearhead the Battle Against Gender-Based Violence

Saminaka, a rural community in Zamfara State hosts people who have been internally displaced due to incessant violence in the State. Resources in this area like food, quality healthcare, and meaningful work have become even more strained. Women and girls are the most vulnerable in this situation, not unlike situations like this around the country.

As a result, Gender Based Violence cases have become more prevalent, with many being unreported and undocumented. The Community leaders in this area have been working alongside civil society organizations including Planned Parenthood Federation of Nigeria (PPFN) Volunteers and Staff, law enforcement, and other stakeholders to ensure that the incidences of Gender Based Violence are eliminated.

One alarming incident brought this issue to the forefront: a 12-year-old girl fell victim to rape at the hands of a father of three. The elderly man lured in and raped the girl each time she sought alms or money to take care of her mother and siblings. The case was brought to us at a PPFN service delivery point in Zamfara State, and immediate medical attention was provided. The survivor was then transferred to the Sexual Assault Referral Center (SARC) in Gusau.

PPFN collaborated with the Hakimi and law enforcement to seek justice for the survivor.  Further investigations were conducted and the case was taken to court, resulting in the remand of the perpetrator.

In Nigeria, more than 17 percent of women experience violence in their lifetime, the numbers are believed to be significantly higher as a culture of silencing is still prevalent. By working alongside local leaders, law enforcement agencies, and other stakeholders, PPFN continues to make a significant impact on the lives of those affected by violence, ensuring that justice is served and survivors receive the care they desperately need.
